TOP FIVE Reasons to Carry Tissues This Week
by the secretly passionate, Mr. Chase Gordon.
EVERYONE's talking about the historical relevance of this week, and maybe you're thinking it's getting indulgent --- like Christmas decorations in October. I say don't fight it - embrace the magic. Reflect on history. Look to the future. Prepare to be a part of it. And don't barf (see #5).
1. MlK had a dream. 100 years after Lincoln freed the slaves, Martin Luther King, Jr., stood in front of the Lincoln monument to proclaim his dream of a country where people were judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. Despite the 100 years, at the time there was so much legal discrimination and racial hatred in the country that few in attendence believed they would live to see the day. 2. President Obama. Less than 50 years after Dr. King's speech, Barack Obama provides proof that Dr. King's dream has come true. 3. Former President Bush. Former! 4. Martin Luther King, Jr. day. Time to be reminded that not only was MLK a passionate leader in the advancement of civil rights, freedom, and equality, but also that he was a passionate advocate of nonviolence. Obama's election shows that Dr. King was right in this view that lasting social change could be brought about without violence. How did we let that part slip? 5. It's flu season. And no, I’m not crying, I've just got something in my eye.
