TOP FIVE John Hughes' Characters
by Sara Licastro
Last week marked the passing of one of my favorite directors. John Hughes helped me survive my teenage years. Without him I wouldn't have known how to dress, who to date, what music to listen to, or how to handle detention.
In honor of the late, great, John Hughes, here's a list of the TOP 5 characters he ever created. 1. Duckie Dale of PRETTY IN PINK Who can forget John Cryer's most memorable character? From the New Wave hair, down to the sexy mod-style creepers, he had me at "Try a Little Tenderness."
He was the outsider individual with a heart, and the ideal counterpart for Andie. I always dreamed of seeing the original ending where Andie picked him instead of Blane. 2. Samantha Baker of SIXTEEN CANDLES Molly Ringwald was John Hughes' muse. She gave so many great performances - but her first, as Samantha Baker, was one of her greatest. She had the perfect 80's ripped dresses. She gave up her underwear to save the nerd. She managed to pull off the world's worst bridesmaid's dress. She got the best birthday present: the perfect stud with the perfect red porsche. 3. Ferris Bueller of FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF "Bueller?" I fantasized about being able to skip school with the charming, sophisticated Matthew Broderick as Ferris. He was so smooth, he could sing, his best friend was cool, he could steal a Ferarri. He even knew how to outsmart valet guys and school principals. Need I say more? 4. Andie Walsh of PRETTY IN PINK You rocked my high school self. I wanted to make my own prom dress. I wanted to be best friends with Duckie. I wanted to hang out at Trax and listen to records. I wanted your hair, your car, and your pearls...I wanted to be PRETTY IN PINK. 5. John Bender of THE BREAKFAST CLUB Judd Nelson epitomized the 80's bad boy with his fingerless gloves and flared nostrils. The thought of detention with him was scary and alluring all at the same time. He was the hard-edged troubled loner who had a soft spot for diamond studs and pretty rich girls.
