TOP FIVE
Trends to Die With This Decade

1. Celebrities That Become Celebrities Simply by Trying to Become Celebrities
What happened to the good old days when you had to create something magnificent, then blow all the money up your nose and die young to be famous. Let's go back there. [Disclaimer: This Top Five was written before the tragic death of Brittany Murphy. Don't be Clueless...never blow anything up your nose.]

2. Politicians on the Take
Maybe it's always been this way and maybe that's why it should end. How about politicians represent their constituents? Constituent is defined as a person who authorizes another to act in his or her behalf. Always here to help.

3. Gay Inequality
It's pathetic that in the 21st century we're still dealing with social issues of this magnitude. They're people, and they're not killing marriage. Straight people took care of that a long time ago. So there you go straights - you're all still #1 in something.

4. Selling Religion
Earlier this year, a preacher tried to coerce me into attending a certain church on the promise that Sinbad also attended this same church. Sinbad?! First, I have no problem with religion, as long as you don't force it upon me. Second, if you are gonna force, you gotta do better than Sinbad. I mean, Sinbad?!

5. Death of Social Conscience
From big business to health care to Wall Street to hate crimes to numbers 1-4 and beyond, we've lost something. FDR once said, "Human kindness has never weakened the stamina or softened the fiber of a free people. A nation does not have to be cruel to be tough." C'mon Americans - we can do better. We have to.

Honorable Mention: Sarah Palin.

By Ned Ryerson, wishing you all Happy Holidays, stranded at the airport.
